报告主题:Simultaneous free-surface and 3D flow measurements of a vortex ring in head-on collision with the air–water interface

Abstract

Quantitative vortex–free-surface coupling requires simultaneous measurement of interface deformation and subsurface flow, but it remains challenging because reflection/refraction near the interface degrade volumetric velocimetry. We present an integrated system that combines multiview stereo (MVS) free-surface reconstruction with four-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry (4D-PTV) for a Reynolds number, 2509 vortex ring in head-on collision with an air–water interface. The two subsystems share a common trigger and a single coordinate system. Stable operation under dual illumination is achieved by combining short time-window background subtraction with the inherent temporal consistency of Lagrangian tracking, which suppresses surface-related optical contamination in the high-speed images. The flow is measured at 600 Hz and the surface at 60 Hz, enabling time-resolved reconstruction of vortex evolution and surface deformation through approach, impact, spreading, and late-stage fragmentation with secondary structure. Measurement quality and alignment are validated by three checks: a kinematic-condition residual from free surface reconstruction that remains narrowly distributed near zero; a stress-free indicator from volumetric velocity gradients concentrated near the shear-free limit; and a correlation-based time-lag analysis showing physically consistent lag growth with depth and high correlation over most depths, peaking at 0.73. The results demonstrate a stable, well-registered simultaneous dataset suitable for quantitative studies of vortex–free-surface interaction.
